Human Brain Function Laboratory

About

Pain often goes away without treatment but it can develop into intractable chronic pain in some individuals. Chronic pain is one of the most common reasons adults in the U.S. seek medical care, it is estimated globally that about one in five people, suffer from intractable chronic pain. Although many characteristics of pain have been linked to specific brain processes, our understanding of chronic pain is still far from complete. With supports from Brain Institute and Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Virginia, the Human Brain Function Laboratory was established in August 2018 to bring together pain scientists, clinicians, and health care professionals to move the pain science forward and bring new treatments for patients with intractable chronic pain.
